St. Mary’s Cathedral in Winnipeg is dedicated to the “Most Holy Name of Mary”. It was first established as a chapel in the Exchange District by Bishop Taché, O.M.I. on June 15, 1868 for English-speaking Catholics. On May 30, 1874, the mission moved to its present site and a church rectory was established. The Archdiocese of Winnipeg was created by Pope Benedict XV on December 4, 1915 and then St. Mary’s Church became its Cathedral on December 8, 1918. In 1951, the stained-glass windows were installed. Theologically, the windows tell the story of God and His Church in narrative scenes and symbols. Tours available.
